A few weeks ago we were given the task of coming up with ideas for short comedy style videos that could be used in a social media campaign for Greggs. The idea that I came up with was for there to be two main young characters throughout the video and for them to be a couple. The idea was that the video would consist of clips of them going throughout their normal day sharing things that a normal couple would share, but then for there to be a twist. The boyfriend shares everything with his girlfriend throughout the day but doesn't want to share his Greggs with her.

Now around two weeks later, we have been put into groups to actually film the ideas and make them into a video that would be used in a social media campaign. One of the restrictions of the video being used in a social media campaign would be the duration of the video. This is done as people want quick snappy and to the point videos when watching them on social media, the video can't be too long and people will not want to watch an advertisement for a long period of time. We were given a maximum of 60 seconds for our videos to fit into. Luckily my AD was 28 seconds long so it easily fit into the limit.

My group for this project was made up of myself, Conrad Buckley & Anya Lillie.
My team were great to work with, they helped me with everything I needed, from shooting clips to carrying equipment to locations.

Each member of the group was asked to create their own AD, so as a group we all played different parts in each other's ad. In my ad, I was the director and also was an actor in it, Anya was also an actor in it and Conrad did the camera for me with help from Eden (a member from a different team).

This meant that all team members got to do a different job role for each ad. For example, Anya directed her own and then did acting in mine.

Anya's Greggs AD can be viewed below, -

I thought my idea would be a good idea and fit into the comedy category as the audience would think that he would share his Greggs with her as he has shared everything else with her in the day, but he actually doesn't share his Greggs with her as he likes it too much.
As you can see from the original plan I created before I filmed my Greggs AD, my ideas and the final product don't fully match up. Most shots that I planned I was actually able to film such as the shot of the couple walking and sharing a drink, and the shot of the couple going into the Greggs store. However, the planned shot of the couple walking through a town center and them sharing a jacket together was not able to be produced as we were not able to film in a town center due to bad weather conditions
This shot was replaced by the shot of the couple in a classroom sharing a pen to write with,

I chose to do this as I thought it was a good replacement for the intended shot as the couple were still sharing something and it meant we were able to shoot the scene inside away from the bad weather.

The only other change that was made to the original plan was a location change, this was in the final scene as it was not filmed at a Greggs store and was instead filmed in the green room at college, I did this as the Greggs store was very busy, we didn't have full permission to film in Greggs and it would have been difficult to bring filming equipment to the Greggs store.

After coming up with my idea of what to make for this project, I went ahead and made a script for my idea. I did this so I could use it on set when filming and make filming run smoother as I could know what was happening/who was in each shot and what shots needed to be filmed and what ones were done.

Again the script was different to what was filmed due to the previous factors, the script still helped me on set to know what needed filming and what locations I needed to go to.

According to the client brief, the budget for this type of social media video would be £4,000. I made this budget sheet to see how my shoot compared in terms of costs.  As you can see the costs add up to very close to the budget of the shoot. This budget sheet was made using average wages of the production roles. This sheet doesn't include the cost of actors, which would be an additional cost on top of everything else.

After planning our ideas for what to film, we were given 2 days to go out and film and then edit our final Greggs AD's. Me, Anya, Conrad, and Eden from another team headed out to film my AD.

We started by filming the shot of the couple walking down the street sharing a drink, we went outside the college to a close by bridge to film this shot. My plan for this shot was to use a slider and a tripod with the camera on it and have the camera operator slowly pull it backwards to get a shot where the characters walk towards the camera while it slowly moves back. This, however, had to change as the surface of the bridge was too bumpy and it made the footage very blurry and shook as the wheels of the slider were vibrating off the pavement of the bridge. I instead got the camera operator to slowly walk backwards with the camera in their hands while me and Anya walked towards it. This meant the shot wasn't as smooth as I hoped but it still worked out really well.

We then went to our local greggs to get the shot of the couple walking into the store together,

After editing the clips I shot together, I ended up with the following video which I am happy and proud of. It can be watched below.

This is the production diary for our first assignment, a Christmas advertisement.

Our team for this assignment was made up of me, Eden and Mitch.

The first thing we did when we got into our team was to sit down and brainstorm ideas for the Christmas AD, the overall theme of the ad was we wanted it to be very similar to a typical John Lewis TV advertisement. To achieve this we had to think of ideas that would be typically seen in John Lewis TV adverts.

1. Synopsis & Story Overview -

Synopsis - Our ad will be a Journey of family generations on Christmas day, from a young girl celebrating with her family to an adult now celebrating with her own family.

Story Overview - The advert will base around the life of a family of three on Christmas day, the family includes the mum and dad and their daughter.
The ad shows the journey through time on Christmas days in the past. Starting from when she was a young girl excited to open her presents under the tree to when she was a teen also opening her presents.
There is then a break in the pattern and a few years go past where the girl isn't at home with her parents anymore, the parents are alone sat on the sofa on Christmas day watching TV when they hear a knock on the door.
They open the door and their daughter is stood there ready to come in to celebrate Christmas day now with her very own daughter.
The young girl runs into the living room to celebrate with her grandparents and to open her presents under the tree just like her mum did when she was her age.

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa - 500 WORD HOMEWORK

Roberto was born in 1975 and is now 43 years old. He is an American producer and screenwriter. Roberto was born in Washington D.C and he went to Georgetown Preparatory School in North Bethesda Maryland and then followed by Georgetown University where he studied playwriting. He also got a master's degree in English Literature from McGill University. He also went and graduated from Yale.

Roberto started his career in 2003 when he started screenwriting. He written shows based on the Archie comics but received a cease and desist order if the show was ever to be shown. While continuing with his screenwriting he also started to write comic books. He grew up liking comic books and read them all the time as a child which is where his inspiration for writing them came from.

Roberto has always had an interest in the Archie comics and had always been making his own add ons to the comic book series to depict the characters and create a new storyline in his own way. In 2013, he created Afterlife with Archie, depicting Archie Andrews living within a zombie apocalypse, the book's success led to him being named Archie Comics' chief creative officer.

After creating comics for some time, he went back to making film & TV, he written a screen adaptation for the book Carrie written by Stephan King. This turned out into the 2013 supernatural horror film that is well known.

He has received many awards for his comic book writing, and also been nominated and won awards for TV shows he has created.

From his work in television, Roberto was the producer of 5 TV shows. 2 of the main ones being hugely popular shows Glee and Riverdale. With 6 Seasons and 121 episodes, Glee was a massive success for Roberto. It ran from 2009 to 2015. Roberto was recognised for his work on Glee when it was nominated for 19 Emmy awards and 4 golden globes. This is one of, if not the biggest highlight of Roberto’s career in the TV industry.

Going back to his days of comic book writing for Archie comics his ideas have now become a reality through his new show Riverdale, which is shown on the CW network and on Netflix. Riverdale is Roberto’s newest and current TV series which bases around the characters in the Archie comics in a town called Riverdale. Riverdale is hugely popular and has already been nominated for many awards while only still being in its third season.

I like and have selected Roberto because he is an example of someone who started from just studying screenwriting to now producing million-dollar budget shows for the worlds biggest streaming sites. His shows have a relatable feel and always have a thrilling feel to them that keep you on the edge of your seat.
The way he has moved his way up in the industry is inspiring. His shows are great as they have storylines that have never been seen before. This is great for the audience as they like shows that have a fresh new story and aren’t just a remake of something that’s been done before.

How he has brought Riverdale to life in this new show is amazing and I as a viewer really enjoy watching it.

    Free Writing Task -

I’ve been at college nearly two months now and I have learnt a lot in the amount of time I have been here, we started with the very basics of how to pick up and use a camera and what frames are used within film & TV, for example a wide shot, close up shot, extreme close up shot, point of view shot and over the shoulder shot. We were given our first task which was called filmmaking 101 this task was given to us to see what we could make with the skills we had. We had to make two short sequences and also recreate a scene from a film. We picked the Forrest Gump life is like a box of chocolate scene for this. We created a short horror and film noir sequence. Making these taught us a lot about what it takes to make a film or TV series. We learnt that a lot of things have to happen behind the scenes before the sequence is even filmed. We learnt how to plan out what we were going to do to make it easier for ourselves when we had to go out and film. We also learnt that other things need to be thought of such as what everyone’s role in the team will be making scripts, planning makeup looks, filming at the right time of day and also framing, lighting, and sound. Another major thing that we learnt was the basics of editing. We learnt how to use the adobe premiere pro software that we use to edit our footage together. We learnt the basics such as how to import footage and how to edit it together on the timeline.
    Advertising Analysis -

Sign - An actual thing that can be seen or used.

Signifier - What the thing can signify for example the colour blue would be the sign because its just the colour blue but it signifies sadness.

Denotation - What we actually see when we look at something

Connotation - These are the things we associate with the thing we are looking at, for example when we look at the colour white we associate it with thing such as purity or cleanliness.

    Desperate Housewives -

1.What are the key signifiers (Words/Images/Sounds) in the sequence and what do they signify?

The main signifiers were images of men and women in different time periods,Starting with Adam and eve at the beginning and finishing with the main housewives of the show at the end. It was a journey through time of men and women. It could be signifying how women have changed over time. There is also an image of a woman cleaning which could signify the stereotype of women only being around to clean.

2.What does the sequence tell us about the content of the programme? What are your expectations of the programme after viewing the sequence?
It tells us that it is going to mainly focus on women as many of the main images in the opening sequence were of women.

3.What audiences are being targeted and how do you know?
I think that the target audience would be middle aged women/housewives.

    Sex & The city -
1.What are the key signifiers (Words/Images/Sounds) in the sequence and what do they signify?
The main signifiers were the shots of the city buildings, this could show that the tv show will be based in a city atmosphere. The woman was also wearing a pink top which could signify that the show will be more feminine.

2.What does the sequence tell us about the content of the programme? What are your expectations of the programme after viewing the sequence?
    It shows that the series will revolve around women and a city setting as lots of shots of the city and a woman walking through the city was used. It also shows that the show will also revolve around sex as in the sequence includes a clip of a bus driving past that shows an ad of a woman saying she knows all about sex and the show is also called Sex & The city.;

3.What audiences are being targeted and how do you know?

    Prison Break   -

1.What are the key signifiers (Words/Images/Sounds) in the sequence and what do they signify?

The key signifiers of this sequence were that nearly of the shots were of men and prison cells which could signify the series is about men in prison. This could also signify that this show is going to be very manly. Also the shot of the man holding the gun could signify that he has done something bad with that gun and that's the reason he is now in prison and why he is planning to escape.
2.What does the sequence tell us about the content of the programme? What are your expectations of the programme after viewing the sequence?Your expectations would be that the series would be full of intense action and a storyline of someone escaping from prison.
3.What audiences are being targeted and how do you know? This show would more of a man target audience because of the action but would also be targeted to women because of the women that are in the show.

    Desperate Housewives -

1.What are the key signifiers (Words/Images/Sounds) in the sequence and what do they signify?
The signifiers would be the many faces that are shown in the sequence, this could signify that the series will be a very real feeling as it is all about the people. It's not trying to dramatize prison but show it as more of a real thing.

2.What does the sequence tell us about the content of the programme? What are your expectations of the programme after viewing the sequence?
The expectations of the show would be that it is very much more about the people and showing how they are all real people more than the drama.

3.What audiences are being targeted and how do you know?

I think this show would be targeted to more of a younger audience than an older audience
